Hello
I have a customer that assures me that this till was working fine when he took it out of storage last week [after 12 months] but went dead on the table while he was playing with it.

Ive removed the plastics and have found 2 rechargeable batteries - a pp3 equivalent 8.4volt
and the old faithful 3.6v 80mA/h button cell. The pp3 was up fine [whats it for????? !dunce ]
but the 3,6v was down to 1.7 and did not significantly increase after being plugged in 24hrs.

Ive now replaced this with a shiny new one but am still faced with a dead machine!

Ive found 3 seperate reset buttons but have no idea what im doing with this model.
inside there are 3 leds - a red one -illuminates when powered on [machine also beeps at this point]
and 2 small yellow and green ones mainboard led and cpu board led - both illuminated.

there seems to be a test connector inside and i have checked some of the voltages :-vp = 24v
vl = 12v vcc_usb 5v [though no power at the usb ports themselves] vbt 4.3v [now i have changed the battery] v33 =3.3v v15m 1.5v

there is 12 volts to the inverter board - but the screen remains dark [it could be the inverter but i would have thought i would get more of a reaction from the rest of the machine if it were that simple??]

Any ideas on what i can try to get this thing to light up at least - if not working.?

Thanks in advance
Andy

One battery is for program backup while the other is to keep the machine up for about 5 mins after power failure and if power is not restored the machine shuts down properly in order to not damage sales data etc.

Take the cover off of the left reset switch and hold it in for 15 seconds while booting up the machine.

If the power is on on the bottom then use the power button on the back right edge of the screen to turn it on.

a built in ups eh? very smart! thanks for that.
pushing and holding left reset for 15 seconds did nothing -i continued to hold it a further 15 seconds after applying power - to no avail
Turning the rocker switch on near psu connector illuminates red led and causes a beep - but the bottom right push button does nothing.
Im open to suggestions
cheers

1. AX-3000 Power management
1. In case of the Electric Power Failure
(When electricity supply to AX is stopped)

The robustness at electric power failure is one of the advantages of AX-3000 Embedded POS against PC-POS. The power failure, including instant power failure of one or two seconds, could happen for many reasons. As an Embedded POS, AX-3000 is designed to work more robustly than PC-POS even in such non-power condition.

AX-3000 has emergency battery which is used in non-power situation (power failure etc). The flashing LED in red color at the bottom of front panel means the AX-3000 is working with this emergency battery (Power Saving Mode). This Power Saving Mode lasts only up to 5 minutes because the battery capacity is not unlimited. If the power comes back during this 5 minutes, the machine goes back to exactly same status before the power failure point. If the power does not come back in 5 minutes, the machine will be shut down automatically to protect all the data without failure in order for the business to continue the operation as usual after electricity power comes back.

What is happening in the AX-3000 internally when the electricity supply is stopped are:

1) When a power failure happens,

AX-3000 will be automatically in a “Power Saving Mode” by the power supplied by the battery. In the “Power Saving Mode”, LCD is turned OFF and LED is flashing in Red color for 5 minutes. And stops to supply the power to the peripheral circuit such as Ethernet, communication ports, USB, etc.

When a power supply is recovered within 5 minutes, AX-3000 automatically returns to normal mode and comes back to exactly the same status as just before the power failure even if it was in the middle of transaction.

2) Either When a power failure is continued more than 5 minutes, or When the battery for the power saving mode is discharged lower than the rated value in less (approx. 70% of normal voltage*) in 5 minutes,

AX automatically performs the shutdown. When AX-3000 is powered on after the power supply recovers, AX just returns to the “Sign-on screen”. However, even if it was in the middle of transaction, the sale data is automatically stored to the clerk, or in case of a track transaction, it is stored to the clerk instead of track before such shutdown. So you can recall the transaction or track by the clerk sign on.

* the battery voltage becomes lower if power failures occurs repeatedly during short period of time before the battery is fully recharged, which normally takes several to 20 hours or so.

* AX-3000 has two Batteries.
1. Battery for SRAM data and Time Clock backup in the power of condition.
2. Battery for “Power Saving Mode” when a power failure.

2. LED lighting/flashing patterns and indication

Color Pattern Indication
Blue Lighting Boot & Normal operation
Flashing During initialization of setup data (in Flash memory)
Green Lighting Standby
Yellow Flashing Firmware update of Sub CPU
Orange Flashing Program data store before Initial reset
Red Slow flashing Power failure
Fast flashing During initialization of setup data (in Static RAM)

3. Reset and Initialize

1. Release “touch screen not work“ condition
2. Hardware reset by RESET button under the plate
3. Physical RAM Test & Initialize Setup
4. Auto Initialize
5. Note - Previous way of “Release “touch screen not work“ condition"

Attention!
When AX does not respond, please try step 1 first and if not work, then step 2, 3 in order.

1. Release “touch screen not work“ condition
When the touch screen does not work, turn off Main Power switch.
This is what is called “software reset” for the case where software is still functioning but frozen, similar to Ctrl+Alt+Del key depression on Windows PC.
A) If AX enters into Power Failure mode (Red LED flashing), turn Main Power switch on, press IR switch for 2 seconds, and release it after you hear buzzer sound (* effective from V3.20. See 5.). AX will shut down and restart automatically with Orange LED flashing.
B) If AX does NOT enter into Power Failure mode, turn Main Power switch on.

► In either case A) or B), “Sign-on screen” is displayed, and sales data including those in the middle of registration is secured.

2. Hardware reset by RESET button under the plate
(Maintenance purpose)
When the hardware becomes out of control
This is what is called “hardware reset” by pressing hardware reset button in case the software does not function any more; similar to that of PC.

Remove the metal plate.
Turn off the Main Power Switch. Press RESET button. Turn on the Main Power Switch.

► In principle, program and sales data will NOT be cleared. However, program and sales data right before this “Hardware reset” might be cleared, depending on the operations.

3. Physical RAM Test & Initialize Setup
When Power ON does not work correctly because the system memory contents are not correct
This is what is called “Initial reset” and “RAM Test”, which delete all data including preset data and sales data. This might be necessary especially when the machine does not start to work or does not work properly because these data in SRAM might be corrupted.

1) Push the power switch (located right side of cabinet) while you keep pressing IR button for approx. 15 seconds until the opening screen with Uniwell logo is shown.
2) If above step 1) does not work, turn the Main Power Switch on (located bottom of the touch panel cabinet) while you keep pressing IR button for approx. 15 seconds until the opening screen with Uniwell logo is shown.
► The memory contents are cleared and the default program is automatically set.

4. Auto Initialize
In case if the battery for memory backup discharged after long period not in use
When the Main Power Switch (located bottom of the touch panel cabinet) is turned on, AX detects the battery discharge. Then, AX clears the memory and set the default program by showing ”Setup data has been initialized. Restarting POS…“ message.

► In the power on condition, leave it more than 3 hours in order to charge the battery.

5. Note - Previous way of “Release “touch screen not work“ condition"
On any previous before V3.20 exclusive, the way of “1. Release “touch screen not work“ condition" was different – the instruction was “If AX enters into Power Failure mode (Red LED flashing), turn Main Power switch on, press IR switch for 2 seconds", and there was no need to “release it after you hear buzzer sound" as currently instructed. In the past, in order to be very sure, some resellers kept on pressing IR switch even for 15 seconds or more, then it automatically brought the machine into the process of “3. Physical RAM Test & Initialize Setup", then the machine was initialized, hence preset data was lost.

Thanks for that Simon
I "think" i followed that lot [though there are so many buttons im not sure which is which]
ive covered most combinations to no avail im beginning to think a labelled diagram with switch names would be helpful tnough i would have expected some activity from the backlight by now?
anyone else have any more ideas?
cheers
