Our UX-40 is reporting 'Turn me off' when ever it is powered on and we cannot clear it. I have tried to reset the register (key off, hold down #4 and the two buttons to the left, turn key to SP, receive the 3 beeps and IR confirmation) but still receive the prompt. I am unable to find anything about this in the manual.

Is that all it shows on the display? No error code or anything else?

That is correct. There are no errors codes shown.

I have no idea, but I have asked Uniwell directly and will let you know if they come back with anything useful.

Really stupid question time now.

Is this definitely a UX-40? Not something else or a variant? The UX-40 had a standard 12-digit numeric display only.

On some of the other old machines though, "Turn Machine Off" was a generic warning message, often related to a paper-jam in the printer, so it's worth checing that as well.
