My TL button and a few of the programmed buttons just beep at me! i can take cheques and credit cards but the TL button suddenly serves no function but to beep!

Sounds like you have one of the machines that has the faulty keysheet (the membrane under the keys). There was a problem in production with them. The only answer is a new keysheet I'm afraid.
