Have had our machine for about 3 years and has just started to randomly print lines of dots (with or without a Euro symbol). Can't see anything in the manual with regards to servicing or cleaning so neither have been done! Can you think of any reason for the machine to hiccup like this?

Hi. I have had this problem when the printer contacts are tarnished. Is it used in a food preparation type of business? Also, does it have a good ink roller in it. It might pay to try a new ink roller first, as they can jam the print drum when they get old.
Next question: Does the display blink off and on when it is doing the problem?

Ok. It's probably that.
If it isn't too badly tarnished, you can spray the housing, and that will probably fix it.
You will need a general purpose lube spray like WD40 or CRC 5.56 (the sort of thing you spray on rusty or squeaky parts to free them up).
Open the machine, and look at the printer. You will see a flat cable with wires inside it. It runs around the printer to the side, where you will see a small black rectangle on the side of the printer. Four of the wires go into that. This is where the rotary switch lives. Just try to get the spray inside this rectange. Really fill it, so the stuff runs out. You won't hurt it. Try to spray it in little holes or gaps in the black rectangle.

Then turn the machine on, and try feeding the paper a few times. this will move it around the switch. I sometimes have to do the whole process two or three times before it starts to come back to life.
