I have a Sharp UP-700 which has come up with a RAM error on the screen, and nothing responds. I can do a master reset, then re-programme it and it's OK for a while, then it display "Break..." and RAM error again.

Is it at the end of its life? or has anyone managed to recover/diagnose/repair this?

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Steve.

If it has extra ram in it then that has almost certainly become unseated. Especially if the till gets moved a lot. It won't look it, but take it out and reseat it again and then you can use Sharps' ingenious fix for it. Wrap cable ties round it! In the past I've done that and put bluetack between the boards to try and stick them together.
There is another thing which seemed to affect the very first machines. One of the wires from the transformer to the main board wasn't soldered very well and came loose but still had some contact. You'll need to take the transformer out to see it though (remembering all the safety precautions!).
One other possibility is a noisy mains i.e. mains with power spikes on it. One of those mains filters for pcs would cure that.

I've also had one that did it. No extra RAM fitted. Would run from anywhere between a couple of days to a month, then throw the program out at random and give the dreaded RAM ERROR. I sent the main board to Sharp and they replaced it. Been good for three years now.
Ps, don't forget to check that the battery is ok.

Thanks guys for your replies.

I have removed the memory module, cleaned the connectors and replaced, and it is back working again (or at least for a few days now!) 8)

Fingers crossed for you :)
If the battery is the problem, it will only lose the program when the power is turned off, so that's a dead give-away. See how it goes.
