Sharp UP-3300

I've inherited 2 Sharp UP-3300 POS terminals, over time both have died and we stopped using them. Recently I'd like to get them backup and running again.

Long story short they've both been master reset, the batteries have been replaced and they are ready to be programmed.

I had a cable made according to the POSutility spec and I've trawled the web and setup the devices so that I "should" be able to communicate with them.
I've got an workstation that's got 2 serial ports and I've tested both of them with a loopback and putty so I know the PC-side works.

The 3300s have 2 serial ports (CN18 & CN19) assuming CN18 is CH1, I've connected my cable, but still no joy.
SRV > SETTING > DEVICE CONFIG > ONLINE is set to CH1
PGM2 > SETTING > TERMINAL is set to MACHINE#1
PGM2 > SETTING > ONLINE CONFIG is set to TERMINAL No.1

What am I still missing?

Folks have eluded on here that they've managed to get serial comms working along with POSutility. Once I'm happy I can connect I can start looking at other products like SharpLynx, ECM manager or whatever's out there.

Hi, I've posted a Sharp ECR Serial Comms cable diagram to my website:
poslynx. files. wordpress. com/2015/04/sharp-comms-cable.pdf (remove the spaces)

Check that your baud rate in the UP-3300 is the same as what the utility is trying to communicate at - and make sure its not too high... 9600 is a good setting for testing purposes.

I do support for SharpLynx software, so you could always download a demo copy of that to try and get the comms working... it's very straight forward to get that up and running.

Justin,

I had already tried that cable layout (I believe it's the same as the one for the POSutility) and it didn't work. In the end I looked up the pinout for the loopback, made myself a loopback cable and tested it with the device. CH#1 wasn't working but CH#2 was working ok. With the loopback layout in mind I created a data cable and I reconfigured the POS to use CH#2 and I now can get connected with SmartLynx and send/receive data.

POSutility however still doesn't connect, although the same setup (PC/cable/POS) works with SmartLynx.

Next trick now was to look at keyboard layout / menus, etc. I see the trial version of SmartLynx has it disabled, so can't really test and it would appear you can't but it online for love or money. An old free version exists, V3, but it's very limited.

Any other options I haven't spotted?

If the POSUtility isn't working and other software is, it would seem to suggest that the communication configuration in the POSUtility is incorrect. (Either that, or its looking for a cable with handshaking lines connected?) I'm sorry to say that I haven't used the POSUtility, so I can't give you too many pointers there. I will do a bit of investigating from my end to see what I can find out about it.

Just to clarify - when you are using the name 'SmartLynx' - do you mean SharpLynx? SharpLynx doesn't allow you to edit keyboard layouts as such - though you can make changes to the items in PLU Menus and Condiment Tables, and you can change key colour and text (associated with Items/PLUs). If you are trialling SharpLynx, we could arrange for a TeamViewer session and I could give you some pointers.

You can't buy SharpLynx online, but I can certainly arrange something for you. Will provide further info in the coming days.

Justin,

I was referring to this youtube video and assumed screen layout editing was available.

(youtube)/watch?v=8PtXjkIWmik (replace youtube with relevant youtube domain name)

I see that is a version called Uniwell Lynx, assuming again it's completely different to the Sharp Lynx version?
