PC Link Problems with Sharp XE-A302

I am having difficulties linking my XE-a302 to my PC.. I had used the software several times in the past, but then the laptop I used in the past died. The new laptop didn't have a 9 pin connection (Windows 7) and I was never able to get it to link up. I resurrected the old laptop (XP) for the express purpose of programming the register. But so far it hasn't worked out. When I attempt to upload the the new programming it says that it is connecting, however it never makes it past that point. I know there are many different ways for the linking process to breakdown. There may be a problem in the software I am running. It might be the driver I am using. Or I might be using the wrong communication settings. Any suggestions would be very welcomed.

PS. - I think this is a great site. I wasn't able to find a solution to my particular problem in any of the forums, but it seems much better than the other sites that purport to offer help.

Thanks !arms !super

I imagine you were using a usb to serial converter on your new laptop. The most likely reason that wasn't working would be the converter settings. It has probably set itself as port 7 or 8 and unfortunately the pc link software won't let you set port numbers that high. You can change the converters port number in control panel to either 1 or 2.
As for your other laptop, I don't know why that's not working without more information.

If you are using a USB to Serial converter it may not ever work regardless of the port. Most of them don't fully emulate a real serial port.

Not the case really. As long as you buy a correct one it will work. I use two machines (one a MacBook dual booting Windows 8) with an emulator and a Microsoft Surface with Windows 8 on it and they both work flawlessly. My emulator runs a FTDI chip inside.

I have also never seen one that didn't work. I've used many different chipset types and every one of them worked perfectly. If there was a comms problem, it has always been caused by a setting or something other than the serial converter. Check the port settings and make sure you have the Sharp cable plugged in between the converter and cash register. So many people try to plug the converter into the register and that will never work.
