ERA420 --> PC connection problems with posutility
OK, I have gone through (maybe not totally thoroughly...) the archives and haven't seen this particular issue when trying to connect to a pc running Win7.
I got an rs232 d9 (null modem) serial cable and plugged it into my ERA420 and my pc. However, I can't get posutility to communicate with the register. The problem appears to lie in my COM ports, perhaps? In Bios I can only direct my pc's serial port to COM1 or COM3, and both of those are initially set to IRQ4 - indicating a possible resource conflict? In Device Manager only COM1 shows up in the Ports list. I have unhidden everything and changed the computer settings so I can REALLY see what is hidden.
I have assigned the ECR alternately to both COM1 and COM3 using posutility, with the same negative results.
In the Modems list in Device Manager I clicked on my dial-up modem's properties and changed the COM3 settings (parity, bits, and whatnot) there to fit the cash register settings in posutility. However, communication between pc and ECR still eludes me. Do I need to disconnect my dial-up modem to free up COM3?
I have tried reassigning my dial-up to another COM port in Device Manager, but then I lose access to COM3 settings altogether.
I'm a bit confused at this point and feel I'm missing a really basic concept here [like maybe my wife's non-profit should find some money (somewhere!) to hire an actual programmer for these things?] 🙂
Is there a Serial Ports for Win7 for Dummies book out there? Sheesh!
Also, does the register key need to be in a particular position when using posutility? I have tried it in MGR, REG, SRV, PGM1/2 - all with same results.
Thanks in advance.
I'm heading to bed and maybe I'll awake to find a really simple solution to all this!!!!! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Have you assigned the port on the till? To assign port 1 do this:
2690 - .(decimal point) - X - 1 - 1000 - ST(SubTotal) - TL(CashTotal)
In North America use @ instead of X. Baud rate is set at 19200.
I've come across rs232 port acting strangely before for a variety of reasons. What I normally do is uninstall the port in device manager, then reinstall it. Usually works!
Thanks! So that's a PGM2 code, right? Didn't work in SRV.
In that code is it 1 X 1000? As typed it did not work.
I tried it with the X (@/For) in between and the till accepted the code, I reset my COM1 settings, but still no luck. After work today, I'll try uninstalling/reinstalling/resetting COM1 after work today and see if that helps. Funny, I tried that for COM3, but didn't for COM1. I think I assumed COM1 was being used for something.
Also, thanks for letting me know about the baud rate being set at 19200. Everything I've read has said to set it at 9600.

Com 3 will be your dial up modem (surprised you've still got one on a wndows 7 laptop!).
You don't need to bother about modems or anything like that. It's just a direct cable connection on com 1. The UK machines are set for 11920 speed, doesn't mean North American ones are! Just try different speeds in posutility.
Do a service reading of your codes.
Key to service
900 @ CASH
What do you have in 903?
Go to PGM2 and write 2600 @ CASH
What do you have in 2690 in the 1 spot?
If you're in North America, PM me your number and I'll give you a call to help you out
