Hi, Looking for some smart person to tell this dumb person what I need to do.

I have an ER-A470 register. I'd like to be able to download sales data to a laptop.
As I understand it the RS232 ports are an option and not fitted as standard.
Where would I obtain the RS232 ports (I believe it is ER-A5RS). Also, The manual mentions a Control ROM (ER-A46R1), Is this required along with the A5RS.

Assuming I know the equipment needed and a place I can get it, the next piece would be what cable do I need to connect to the serial port. Is a Null modem cable ok ?

Lastly assuming I can get communicating with the till, what software is best to use and how do I get Monthly Sales reports. I have something called POSUTILTY but not sure if its any good.

Sorry for a long winded first post. Hopefully someone can assist.

Hi,

I haven't seen one of these cash registers for a long time but I thought you got one RS232 Port as standard, is this definately not the case? Are there no connectors on the side anywhere?

If not then you would need an additional RS232 port which is indeed a ER-A5RS. you wouldn't require the control ROM as that is only used when connecting ECR to ECR in a Master / Slave setup, you wouldn't need one for an ECR to PC setup. I really have no idea where you would get one from though, you would have to ring around all the sharp dealers by searching on google.

The cable spec is a straight forward enough cable to make, it's not a Null modem cable but I've already given the pin out in a previous post:
sharp-er-a420-no-communications-with-posutility-t130.html

As for the POSUtility it is very very basic and not very easy to use but unfortunately it's the only one out there that I know of. Do you have a manual for it as I could send you one to see what it looks like and what it will give you as far as sales?

Hope this is some use.

Regards

Many thanks for the info. I will have to give the register a closer inspection to see if I can find an existing 232 port. Pretty sure the manual said it was an option though.

Thanks for the cable info. Do you know anywhere that could make one to that spec ?

The manual for the POSUTILITY software would be great if you have it.
If I can basically extract monthly sales data somehow I can reformat the output and stick it in a database to do reports.

cheers

Hi,

Heres a manual for a little more info:

downloads/freestuff/SharpPOSUtility.zip

We can make up the cable if you still decide you need one at some point.

As far as I can see, the sales reports just come back from the cash register as a csv file which you would need to open in excel and then do what ever you need to with it. I don't think you can actually view them with the utility.

cheers

thanks for the manual, that will help. a csv file of the sales data will be just fine for me.

How much would it cost to get the cable made up ?
