Samsung ER-290.
Can enter ££s in any mode. OK
Thereafter almost ANY key gives me constant beep and E1 error code.

All the keys give a response so it isn't a shorted key?

Have fitted a new battery and let it charge.

User Manual says to clear RAM with key in MC mode then switch on with C(LEAR) key held down and printer will respond with "CS" .. doesn't - it prints only 'C'.

#/NS key appears to totalise, at least it prints sensibly and no error code.

If I could get hold of a service/repair manual it might help me dig deeper.

this is a simple "toy town" throw away machine! there is no service manual lol
you say that the no sale totalises?
thats wrong to start with - its a simple non add number / no sale button - not for adding up.
push it on its own - the drawer should open

in reg you should be able to enter a value and hit any of the departments followed by the cash key

my guess is you have not correctly ram cleared the till - what key are you using in the lock to perform the all clear operation?

Funny  you should say that. It would be used in a toy shop!

Well, there's nothing to totalise but it does print a report.
No service manual? This board won't allow posting URLs but google "samsung er-290 service repair manual" and there's an immediate link to a service manual. (Found it after I'd posted ;) )

Nope, doesn't do that. Ah! Which key are you referring to?

in reg you should be able to enter a value and hit any of the departments followed by the cash key

Nope. Enter a value. hit any other key: B.e.e.e.e.e.P!

Master key set to MC position. As I said,

User Manual says to clear RAM with key in MC mode then switch on with C(LEAR) key held down and printer will respond with "CS" .. doesn't - it prints only 'C'.

on the side of the key is a letter
what letter is it ? eg X, Z or P perhaps?

where is the "mc" position located on the lock? [12 oclock 3 oclock5oclock etc]

if any other key but numbers gives error, try 1 into clerk button then a value into a department.

the terminology you are using is unusual and im not sure whether you are familiar with cash registers?

if the book states it should print .......................cs and it doesn't
then clearly you are not doing it correctly!

Correct, Andy. I am not familier with cash registers :(

three of the keys have the letters as you say but the 'Master' key doesn't. It's the only key..

where is the "mc" position located on the lock? [12 oclock 3 oclock5oclock etc]

that will turn around to the six o'clock position ... exactly opposite to the OFF position.

if any other key but numbers gives error, try 1 into clerk button then a value into a department.

If I hit the CLERK button in any combination/sequence with numeric '1' or numeric '1' yellow button same error E1 and the constant beep.

if the book states it should print .......................cs and it doesn't

Checked and rechecked power off - press C(ancel) button - power on - printer prints "..........C". If I try the same sequence with any other button the printout is "..........P"
