I have an ER5200, where the journal tape is only printing on the left half, and not the right half, for example, it will print the description of an item, but not the price. Does anyone have any beginning troubleshooting techniques for me to start with, before I just start replacing parts?

initially , check the platen roller on the lid of the clamshell - but if there's a clean cut from printing to not printing then its the thermal head or drivers.
why not swap the receipt and journal printers over?if the fault moves too then its the head - if it swaps to the second printer then its the drivers.
