I have had to move my PC software to a new PC as the old one broke. I am running windows 7 starter and have no serial ports. I installed the ER380 software no problem, and it will open and edit all the files I moved from my old PC - joy!! I ordered a USB to Serial cable and installed the drivers as in the documentation. Windows recognised the adapter cable when I plugged it in, and I went into device manager to change the port settings and changed to COM1. When I launch the utility software and select com1 all is OK until I either try to upload or download from the till, then I get the error message Port Initialise Fail.

I get this message regardless of whether the till is connected so it would seem to be an issue with the software opening the COM1 port. Has anyone else run the ER380 software on a PC with a USB - Serial converter? Any ideas please?

Serial converters almost never default to port one. Check which port your converter is really using.

Thank you for your reply, but as originally posted, I have already changed the port to COM1. Also, as the interface seems to allow both com1 and com2 when the app launches, I have tried it also with com2.

Any other ideas welcome??

I beg your pardon - As I said in the original post I changed the port number in device manager - and I did read your post - it would seem you didn't read mine too well.

There are some USB to serial that Samsung utilities do not like, they must use the Prolific driver. However make sure all the settings match, baud rate, parity etc. Then unplug the the USB and plug it bck in with the utility running and try agin.
