Following replacing a dead battery the screen displays nothing and the keys do not work. For all intensive purposes it is dead. Any ideas anyone?

Totally standard if you didn't leave the power on while changing the battery. It will have lost all programming and data and now it has scrambled RAM contents.
You need to hit the reset button next to the CF card slot then run through the initialization tables in the programming manual. Then you have the wonderful job of a full re-programming on your hands (if you didn't back it up).
