I thought of the cable but I've never had a cable come loose except for the customer display cable when they twist it around and round until it yanks the cable out of the board. Since both displays are dead, I didn't think that would be the case as the operator display cable is usually very tightly connected. Is this a common problem on the USA version perhaps?

Yes I personally had this happen to me. Programmed a TE2400 and shipped it to customer. When it arrived the displays did not work. Called Casio and they said they had a lot of these issues and it was a ribbon cable. Lost the sale and $80.00 in shipping costs

Thanks, everyone. We gave up and shipped back to seller. Should get a refund, minus the shipping costs. So much for my ebay experiment of purchasing used registers! Had hoped to use them as "back-ups" (we have 30+ registers out there). Never have had any issues with the ones we've purchased new, so sticking with that plan!
