Casio SE-S300 and Metrologic MS9535
To round off this thread and for other interested parties, there are three variants of base unit for the Metrologic/Honeywell MS9535 VoyagerBT bluetooth barcode scanner:
-547 Keyboard wedge. This has very limited RS232 capability (transmit/receive only). It has no RTS/CTS handshaking and therefore will not work with any cash register that requires handshaking support.
-538 USB. This has better RS232 support in that it does support RTS/CTS but after lengthy conversations with Honeywell, we have established that there is a bug in the scanner base firmware that means RTS/CTS handshaking does not operate correctly. As Casio cash registers are very specific about RTS/CTS, this base will not work with the SE series ECRs.
-514 RS232. This base has full RS232 support and although I have not tried it yet (as I don't currently have one), I'm told by Honeywell that this base does support RTS/CTS handshaking correctly and therefore should work with SE series ECRs.
It's been a long journey and my thanks go to Dominik at Honeywell who has persevered with this for a few weeks now to get to the bottom of why the USB and RS232 bases which are apparently identical are actually not the same. Sadly, I don't think we'll be seeing a firmware update for the USB base anytime soon so my only option is to purchase an RS232 base. Seems obvious, but not when I really wanted a USB base with RS232 capability on board.
My RS232 breakout box hasn't seen the light of day for nearly 20 years. I never thought I'd need it again but actually, it's been key to solving this mystery!
